Evaluating ecosystem functioning of a long-term dumping site in the Bay of Seine (English Channel) ArchiMer
Raoux, Aurore; Baux, Noémie; Pezy, Jean-philippe; Balay, Pierre; Lesourd, Sandric; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
The impact of 70 years of dumping harbour dredged material on ecosystem functioning was compared to a control site (non-impacted zone). A combination of indices (Shannon-Wiener diversity, Pielou evenness, BO2A, AMBI benthic indices) and modelling (Ecopath models) generated Ecological Network Analysis indices were used to detect the dumping operations effects. ENA indices showed that dumping operations appear to have a relatively limited impact on the structure and flow pattern of the local food web. In fact, only small variations between the two sites are revealed by a comparison of ENA indices between the impacted and non-impacted zone. This result could be explained by the fact that the Bay of Seine is historically characterized by a high level of human...

Keystone species: toward an operational concept for marine biodiversity conservation ArchiMer
Valls, Audrey; Coll, Marta; Christensen, Villy.
Various definitions and indices have been proposed in the literature to identify keystone species. In this study, we intended to make the concept of keystone species operational for marine biodiversity conservation. We used an exclusive definition of keystone species, based on the original concept of keystone predator, and derived a new functional index of keystoneness (KS) from an ecosystem-modeling approach. First, several KS indices were formulated, by combining measures of the mixed-trophic impact (MTI) and biomass of species. Then, a meta-analysis was performed, based on 101 published Ecopath food-web models, selected with a scoring method, and representative of the variety of marine ecosystems worldwide. The indices were applied to the models, and...

Modelling the Mediterranean marine ecosystem as a whole: addressing the challenge of complexity ArchiMer
Piroddi, Chiara; Coll, Marta; Steenbeek, Jeroen; Moy, Diego Macias; Christensen, Villy.
An ecosystem modelling approach was used to understand and assess the Mediterranean marine ecosystem structure and function as a whole. In particular, 2 food web models for the 1950s and 2000s were built to investigate: (1) the main structural and functional characteristics of the Mediterranean food web during these 2 time periods; (2) the key species/functional groups and interactions; (3) the role of fisheries and their impact; and (4) the ecosystem properties of the Mediterranean Sea in comparison with other European regional seas. Our results show that small pelagic fishes, mainly European pilchards and anchovies, prevailed in terms of biomasses and catches during both periods. Large pelagic fishes, sharks and medium pelagic fishes played a key role in...
